The Music Connection
After over 15 years of working in landscaping doing extremely backbreaking work, Jason Poff knew that it was time to make a change. He always had a passion for records, and he had been an avid collector for years. After acquiring a pretty large supply, he thought to himself, “What am I going to do with all these records?” So he began to sell them on eBay. After some time selling exclusively online, Jason and his wife, Alicea, took a leap of faith, and in 2018, opened an official brick and mortar retail location.
Mothership York specializes in quality new and used Vinyl LP Record Albums. Jason and Alicea were inspired to name their business “Mothership” from the Parliament album, “Mothership Connection.” They felt that the quirky retro alien theme flowed together perfectly with the hippie/vintage vibe of their business, and thus, “Mothership York” came to life.
Alicea’s personal passion is antiques. So while Jason is always on the search for vintage records, Alicea is always on the search for vintage collectibles in general. Her family was in the antique business her whole life, so she’s always been familiar with having a love and appreciation for all things past. She and Jason spend much of their time traveling around looking for old treasures together, and have now incorporated these other collectibles into the business as well.
The York Merchant provided Jason and Alicea with another opportunity to showcase their vintage finds. Half of their double wide space is filled with Jason’s records, and the other half is filled with Alicea’s antiques and collectibles. They love the crafty, vintage, artsy vibe of The York Merchant, and were drawn to the space initially because of the unique combination of “artisan” and “antique” that is found at the marketplace. They have both lived in York their entire lives, and appreciated seeing this original concept come to life in the area. They love that all of the merchants share the same passions and help to support each other in their individual journeys.
What Jason and Alicea love most of all about their business is the opportunity to pursue it as a family. They have two sons who are there with them in every step of their journey. They all search for antiques together, go to concerts together, and they’ve even all flown down to Jamaica for a reggae concert together. They truly celebrate their love of music and vintage together as a family.
